Is Scraping HDPE pipe required?
YES! HDPE pipe forms an oxidation layer on the outside of the pipe as a result of exposure to atmospheric agents and UV radiation. The preparation of the pipe surface, known as scraping, eliminates this oxidation film which must be removed in order to have the proper melt flow and to perform a proper Electrofusion joint. This process may be accomplished with a manual scraper tool (pipe scraper). However, the process is much quicker and easier with the use of a mechanical scraper tool. The scraper tools are set up to self advance on the pipe as the operator moves the handle around the pipe. The mechanical scraper tools contain a pressure sensitive spring loaded cutter, which can adjust for any abnormalities in the pipe.
